This programme is aimed at students who need to develop their academic English language skills in order to gain entry into degree programmes.

It focuses on academic listening skills in lectures and tutorials, speaking in academic contexts, academic reading and writing skills, including research and referencing.

Entry criteria

General

Applicants must meet the following criteria for admission in the programme:

Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident;

OR

Hold a Certificate of Refugee Status and provide evidence of eligibility to study for the duration of enrolment;

OR

Have an appropriate visa.

Academic

Applicants must meet the following criteria for admission into the programme:

Hold an NZCEL Level 4 Academic or equivalent

OR

Have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in writing, or equivalent

OR

Achieve a score of 85 or higher in the School of English online diagnostic Test.

Provisional Entry

Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Faculty Dean.
