Summary
Programme highlights
This programme has two qualifiers: Academic and General.
The Academic qualifier is for students who intend to continue their studies in mainstream programmes (e.g. Nursing, Business and IT, Engineering). The aim is to develop their academic English language skills in listening effectively to lectures and tutorials, speaking fluently and confidently in oral presentations and group discussions, reading and writing academic texts for e.g. reports and essays.
The General qualifier is for students who want to further improve their English language skills in listening effectively to monologues and dialogues, speaking fluently and confidently in social interactions, reading and writing different text types on various topics.

The programme will consist of four compulsory courses, each worth 15 credits.

Entry criteria
Applicants must meet the following entry criteria:
Have New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3)
Or
Provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.0
Or
A level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1
Selection Requirements
Applicants will be selected in order of completed applications received.
The application process consists of an interview on enquiry or at an agreed interview appointment dependant on lecturer availability. The applicant's previous English learning experience, their current educational/learning goals, and their preferred qualifier will be established in this interview. A writing sample will be collected, and the interviewer will make a provisional assessment of the applicant's level in speaking and listening. A placement test to confirm level will be administered following the interview.
Provisional Entry
Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Faculty Dean.
