Summary

The Certificate in English for Academic Study prepares you for degree level study at AUT or other universities. This programme is also suitable for Certificate in English Language graduates who want to continue their study, and applicants with overseas qualifications whose first language is not English. A placement test may be required in both cases. Throughout this programme you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

You also learn about the academic culture in New Zealand and how to take control of your studies. If you achieve a B grade average or higher, and at least a B for writing and a C+ in all other papers you meet the English language entry requirements for most AUT undergraduate degrees.

Entry criteria

NCEA: 48 credits at level 2 or higher and eight credits at level 1 or higher in any subject from Classical Studies, Drama, English, Geography, Health Education, History, History of Art, Media Studies, Social Studies or Business Studies, Economics, Physical Education, Te Reo 毛利, Te Reo Rangatira or ESOL level 3 credits in reading and writing.

English Language Requirements:

Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 overall with all bands 5.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 70; Computer-based: Total score of 133 with minimum essay writing of 3.5; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with C/C+ grade; GIE with C+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 162; PTE minimum overall score of 42.
