Summary

Learn English and develop the English language skills you need to do well in education or your career.

The Certificate in English Language is for:

Students who are learning English as an additional language
New migrants who want to improve their English to prepare for future academic study
People who want to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing so that they can study the Certificate in English for Academic Study or other university courses

You can start and exit the programme at any of the four levels offered:

Introduction to Academic English
Academic English 1
Academic English 2
Academic English 3

The Introduction to Academic English level is for students preparing for academic study. You practise speaking, reading, listening and writing English.

Academic English 1, 2 and 3 are for students ready to focus on skills they need to study in New Zealand. Students learn by giving presentations, reading and discussing English materials, note taking, essay and report writing.

Your language level will be assessed so that we can place you in the appropriate class.

Selection criteria

Placement test and interview will be required
Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent) preferred

English Language Requirements:

Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 overall with all bands 5.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 70; Computer-based: Total score of 133 with minimum essay writing of 3.5; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with C/C+ grade; GIE with C+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 162; PTE minimum overall score of 42.
