If you are interested in and passionate about the natural world, a Diploma in Arts (Environmental Studies) is a good place to begin. You’ll explore people's relationships with the environment through different disciplines.

What is it Like?

Environmental studies is concerned with human society in its physical setting. It examines the relationships between natural, social and built environments. Environmental studies is a broad topic that explores diverse and complex environmental issues from a range of perspectives - scientific, social, cultural and economic.

Careers

With society becoming more environmentally aware, careers in this area are growing. Many local and national government departments are employing people to focus on aspects of the environment and how it can be preserved. Areas where knowledge of environmental studies is useful include:

Allocation of water resources
Ecological restoration
Endangered species management
Waste and toxic substances management
Weed and pest management

Requirements

The requirements for the Diploma in Arts endorsed in Environmental Studies are:

Pass in both:

230.111 Tū Kupu: Writing and Inquiry
230.112 Tū Arohae: Critical Thinking

Pass 75 credits in Environmental Studies consisting of:

at least 45 credits at 200- and 300-level in Environmental Studies

30 credits at any level in Environmental Studies

The remaining 15 credits for the Diploma in Arts can be from Part II of the schedule for the Bachelor of Arts degree (including further courses from the endorsement subject) and/or courses offered in other undergraduate degrees.

Entry criteria

Applicants must have completed New Zealand secondary school qualification or other equivalent overseas qualification.
