Summary
Further your study and enhance your career potential with advanced courses and supervised research alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.
Programme overview
You can take the one-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) as a qualification in its own right after a Bachelor of Arts, or as a pathway to a one-year Master of Arts.
Postgraduate study is a unique opportunity to deepen your study of an academic area that you find intellectually rewarding and personally meaningful.
Asian Studies
Asian Studies gives you a broad understanding of the complexities and opportunities of Asia.
Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary programme that draws on the wide range of expertise on Asia both in the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics and across the Faculty of Arts as a whole.
The University of Auckland offers the widest range of Asian Studies course options in New Zealand. You can choose to study film, literature, politics, history, popular culture, philosophy, geography, economics and anthropology.
Asian Studies graduates have gone on to careers in international organizations, NGOs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other areas of government.
Many students choose to augment their Chinese, Japanese or Korean major with a major or minor in Asian Studies; alternatively other students like to add Asian expertise to their major in other areas offered within the Bachelor of Arts.
Postgraduate study opportunities in Asian Studies
Asian Studies takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Asia, integrating aspects of Asian languages and cultures with history, politics and comparative literature.
Postgraduate work in Asian Studies requires an ability to conduct research in one or more Asian languages. You are encouraged to take advantage of the scholarships and exchange programmes offered by the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics and improve your language skills by studying abroad either before or during your postgraduate study.
The BA(Hons) is a stand alone degree at postgraduate level. It may be taken after a completed BA and is awarded as a separate qualification. The BA(Hons) may be used as the entry qualification for the one year MA.
Postgraduate careers
Your combination of advanced language skills and in-depth knowledge of your area of interest could lead to a career in the corporate and public sectors, international organisations, NGOs, diplomacy, IT and the media, and work in Asian countries or with New Zealand's growing Asian communities.
