    Programme overview

    You can take the one-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) as a qualification in its own right after a Bachelor of Arts, or as a pathway to a one-year Master of Arts.

    Postgraduate study is a unique opportunity to deepen your study of an academic area that you find intellectually rewarding and personally meaningful.

    As well as deepening your knowledge in small classes with some of New Zealand’s leading scholars, you can hone advanced skills that will be an advantage in any career.

    Italian is an opportunity to study not only the language of Italy but also Italian culture and society.

    In Italian language courses you can learn to speak, read and write Italian. You can study the language from beginners' to advanced levels.

    You can also study Italian literature and film, and medieval and Renaissance culture. But modern Italy is also important, and we examine contemporary Italian society and culture.

    We offer a complete range of postgraduate programmes in Italian. You can study with internationally renowned staff who specialize in key areas of Italian cultural studies.

    Study and research opportunities reflect our teaching and research strengths: medieval and Renaissance studies; eighteenth-century Italian theatre; nineteenth-century Italian fiction; twentieth-century literature; Italian theatre and film; women’s studies; Italian popular culture.; We recommend an interdisciplinary approach, and encourage you to enrol in courses from other subjects, such as History or Comparative Literature.

    Italian and your career

    Our graduates work in journalism, business, government service, professional translating, interpreting, diplomacy, librarianship and teaching, with some working as English teachers in Italy.

    Advanced taught courses (75 or 90 points)

    A small research project such as a dissertation (usually 30 or 45 points)

    Entry criteria

    A BA with a major in Italian. You must have an average grade of B or higher in 45 points above Stage II in the major.
