    Summary

Pursue a flexible business degree and gain strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. A wide range of conjoint options are available.

    Programme overview

You will complete a set of core courses. These include an exciting two course sequence in Business and Enterprise. These will introduce the types of choices facing entrepreneurs and managers and help you develop your academic and professional skills.

Your first year core programme will provide a strong base from which to launch into your chosen major or majors. A double major will enable you to gain greater breadth and increase your career options by combining two sets of courses at advanced level.

    Commercial Law

Reasons to study Commercial Law including career opportunities, requirements for the major and specific undergraduate courses you will study at the University of Auckland Business School.

    Why study Commercial Law?

In Commercial Law you will study the legal frameworks used to make business decisions in the public and private sectors. You will focus on legal problems you may encounter in your career. Commercial law is crucial to all business careers, whether in accounting, finance, management, HR, marketing, property, or entrepreneurship.

    Complementary majors

A double major combines two specialist fields of study. Commercial Law is a popular second major and complements most other business majors including:

    • Accounting
    • Finance
    • Marketing
    • Management
    • International Business

    Conjoint degree

Commercial Law can also work well in a conjoint degree combination or an elective with a Science or Engineering degree.

Studying commercial law will give you an array of skills that are valued highly in business. It will develop your analytical and critical thinking skills, improve your written communication skills, and help you to think strategically about business opportunities and business risks.

    What are the career paths?

Depending on the other major, you could become a financial accountant, financial adviser, investment consultant, receiver, regulator or business policy adviser.

    Programme structure

The BCom offers Commercial Law as a single major or as a double major alongside one of the other majors offered within the BCom, although it is recommended that it is taken as a double major. You can also study the Bachelor of Commerce in Commercial Law as part of a conjoint degree programme where you study for two degrees at once. Note however that a conjoint BCom/LLB is not possible with this major.

A BCom with a single major is a three-year degree programme. You will be required to complete a minimum of 24 courses (360 points). A set of seven compulsory core courses (105 points) in your first year of study will become the building blocks for your degree. With careful planning you can complete a double major.
