    Summary

    Gain sophisticated analytical skills and be better equipped for your career in business with a one-year postgraduate qualification for high-achieving BCom graduates.

    Programme overview

    If you have achieved consistently high grades in your Bachelor of Commerce degree (or equivalent) you could be eligible for the honours programme. It will provide you with an additional 120 points of postgraduate research-based study to develop your analytical skills and critical thinking.

    You will complete a set of advanced courses in the discipline and a short supervised dissertation or project that will demonstrate your independent research skills. Your honours programme structure and courses will depend on the specialization selected.

    Studying Information Systems will equip you to develop creative and innovative solutions to problems in government, businesses and non-profit organisations. You can study Information Systems at both undergraduate and postgraduate level at the Business School.

    Areas of study

    Information Systems involves the analysis and design of systems, including areas such as computer networking, information security, database management, and decision support systems.

    Information Management deals with the practical and theoretical problems of collecting and analysing information in a business function area. Topics include business productivity tools, applications programming and implementation, electronic commerce, digital media production, data mining, and decision support.

    Data Communications and Networking deals with information and telecommunication technologies that organizations depend on and exploit to their competitive advantage. Courses are integrated with the Cisco Networking Academy Programme giving students the opportunity to prepare towards becoming a Cisco Certificate Network Associate.

    Programme structure

    The honours programme comprises 120 points, i.e 90 points of coursework plus a 30-point dissertation. It is possible to include up to 30 points of elective courses from a relevant field.

    30 points: INFOSYS 788 Dissertation

    45 points: INFOSYS 720, 750, 751

    45 points from INFOSYS 700, 701, 722-740, OPSMGT 752, 757

    Entry criteria

    A BCom with at least a B grade average in the Stage III courses required for the major.

    A major in Information Systems or equivalent and 15 points at Stage II in Statistics, or an equivalent course as approved by the Head of Department.

    English language requirements: IELTS 6.5; TOEFL (iBT) 90; TOEFL (paper-based) 575; CAE or CPE 176; PTE 58; MELAB 85.
