Summary
Whether you’re a practitioner keen to upskill in an area of law, a local graduate looking to specialise or an international student looking to gain a qualification from a leading Law School, our LLM will give you the flexibility and choice you are looking for.
Programme overview
The LLM is designed to provide an advanced level of study for both full-time students and those who are legal practitioners or engaged in other full- or part-time employment. It can be undertaken by coursework, research or a combination of both. You can choose from over 25 taught courses and entry to the LLM is available throughout the year.
You can concentrate your study in particular areas of specialisation or study a broad range of legal subjects.
The LLM taught (coursework) allows you to study areas in greater depth and complexity than at undergraduate level. The programme offers courses that provide detailed analyses of particular areas of law, as well as courses that are more policy-oriented.
The LLM by research allows you to conduct in-depth study in an area of personal interest to enhance employment opportunities either professionally or academically.
Each course contains a significant research component, usually in the form of a 12,500- word research essay for 30-point courses. The LLM also permits cross-disciplinary study in the form of one or two masters courses (up to 30 points) from another faculty at the University of Auckland.
Litigation and Dispute Settlement Resolution
The Faculty is developing its expertise in process-oriented teaching and research and has recently added the Litigation and Dispute Resolution specialisation to the LLM. It has particular strength in the Law of Arbitration and International Arbitration, but a number of its other staff include the study of dispute resolution mechanisms in their teaching and research, in areas such as International Law, Environmental Law, Globalisation and the Law. The Faculty supplements its own expertise by inviting specialists in the field to teach intensive courses in the LLM.
