    Summary

Whether you’re a practitioner keen to upskill in an area of law, a local graduate looking to specialise or an international student looking to gain a qualification from a leading Law School, our LLM will give you the flexibility and choice you are looking for.

    Programme overview

The LLM is designed to provide an advanced level of study for both full-time students and those who are legal practitioners or engaged in other full- or part-time employment. It can be undertaken by coursework, research or a combination of both. You can choose from over 25 taught courses and entry to the LLM is available throughout the year.

You can concentrate your study in particular areas of specialisation or study a broad range of legal subjects.

The LLM taught (coursework) allows you to study areas in greater depth and complexity than at undergraduate level. The programme offers courses that provide detailed analyses of particular areas of law, as well as courses that are more policy-oriented.

The LLM by research allows you to conduct in-depth study in an area of personal interest to enhance employment opportunities either professionally or academically.

Each course contains a significant research component, usually in the form of a 12,500- word research essay for 30-point courses. The LLM also permits cross-disciplinary study in the form of one or two masters courses (up to 30 points) from another faculty at the University of Auckland.

    Public Law

Public law research and teaching at the Auckland University Law Faculty ranges across the full gamut of public law scholarship. There is a core group of public lawyers whose work covers both traditional constitutional and administrative law and the two main modern additions, namely study of the Bill of Rights and the Treaty of Waitangi. In addition, there is a wider grouping of staff who work in specialist fields such as local government and resource management, health and mental health law, and immigration and refugee law. To the Faculty of Law’s own group of teachers and researchers is added annually a number of invited teachers with a menu of subjects that changes annually. Recent such courses have included South Pacific Constitutions, Prosecuting in the 21st Century, and a number of courses found above in the Human Rights specialisation.
