Programme overview

The Master of Music (MMus) is designed to further develop your musical skills, enabling entry to a high-level career in many areas of music. At masters level, you are able to specialise in one of four distinct areas – performance, composition, musicology or studio pedagogy.

You will have the chance to investigate your individual interests and talents, engage in independent thought about music and critically analyse the theories and practices that influence your discipline.

Programme structure

The Master of Music is a 120-point degree. Depending on your area of specialisation, the assessment requirements for the Master of Music are as follows:

Performance – a 60 to 90-minute concert recital and accompanying written thesis

Composition – a written thesis and portfolio of compositions

Musicology – a thesis on an approved topic

Studio Pedagogy – a combination of practical and written components with an educational focus

Within your body of work, you are free to explore the musical, social, cultural and academic trends and influences on your discipline, while being supported by our staff of internationally renowned composers, musicologists, performers, scholars and educators.

Entry criteria

You must have completed a one-year postgraduate degree, following an undergraduate degree, at a recognised university (or similar institution) in the same major/subject you are applying for. You will need a GPE of 6.0.
