Programme overview:
The Mathematics Education specialty within the MprofStuds degree is designed for mathematics teachers who wish to study and research their classroom practice.
The degree brings together research, mathematical knowledge, and professional experience to develop critical approaches to mathematics teaching and learning. The specialization is jointly offered by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education.
The degree has three components (that can be taken in any order):
Students will research work related to their mathematics teaching practice.
Taught masters
45 points (Dissertation) from MATHS 785; STATS 792; EDPROFST 789
At least 45 points from MATHS 701-789; STATS 701-787; ENGSCI 701-772
Up to 30 points from EDUC 764; EDPROFST 787; or other courses as approved by the Head of School of Curriculum and Pedagogy, or programme director
The 45-point dissertation may be supervised either through Mathematics, Statistics or the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
Research masters
90 points (Research portfolio): MATHS 790
15 points from EDPROFST 787 or EDUC 764
15 points from MATHS 701-770; STATS 701-787; ENGSCI 701-772
The 90-point Research Portfolio will be jointly undertaken with the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
Career opportunities:
Graduates of this programme will be better able to be senior practitioners in mathematics education at primary, secondary or tertiary level, and to take on positions of responsibility that involve mentoring other teaching staff.
In particular, it is expected that graduates of the MProfStuds (Mathematics Education) will be suited for Lead Teacher or HoD Mathematics roles in secondary schools.
This degree may provide the foundation for PhD study.
Further study
From a masters degree you can go on to doctoral study. The Faculty of Education and Social Work offers two programmes at doctoral level – the Doctor of Education (EdD) and the Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD).
