Summary
The Master of Science (MSc) programme enables you to pursue advanced study in your area of interest with the opportunity to work on independent research.
Programme overview
Studying for an MSc is an opportunity for committed scientists to focus on a relevant area of interest or practise and pursue an advanced qualification. While taught masters will provide you with specialist training in your chosen field, a research masters will develop advanced research skills, working alongside Faculty of Science researchers - many of whom are major contributors in their field.
Wine Science
In the last twenty years, the global wine industry has become increasingly internationalized and sophisticated. Along with other new-world producers, the New Zealand wine industry has grown rapidly. This success has created demands for highly trained and skilled participants and for locally focused scientific research of the highest standards.
The programme uses the experiences of winemaking in New Zealand to highlight the multiple dimensions and applications of wine science. A central theme is that wine science is more than simply winemaking. The programme is organized around the understanding of wine production as a process that runs from the vine to the mouth. Courses examine the science of grape production and winemaking, and analytical techniques in winemaking. Students also have the opportunity to learn about the organization and operation of wine businesses and the industry as a whole. They are encouraged to pursue particular fields of interest by completing a research project in wine science and by enrolling in relevant specialised courses in associated departments.
Career opportunities
Students receiving their Postgraduate Diploma or Master's degree in Wine Science often gain work experience by taking seasonal vintage jobs in New Zealand and also overseas. It's common for them to experience two vintages in one year by working in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Longer term, most of our graduates find permanent positions in winemaking, laboratory or quality assurance positions. A few also choose sales and marketing positions in the wine industry.
