Summary

Launch into a fulfilling career as a professionally certified primary teacher by adding this one-year masters to your existing qualification.

Programme overview

Graduates of the Master of Teaching (Primary) will have the knowledge and skills to be effective teachers of all learners, in particular those from priority student groups. They will meet the Education Council’s Graduating Teacher Standards and therefore meet the requirements for registration and provisional certification in New Zealand. Graduates of this programme will be eligible to teach children from Year 1 to Year 8 (typically aged 5 to 13 years old).

The programme is for high-achieving graduates from any discipline. It aims to develop beginning teachers who are efficacious, resilient, self-motivated and self-regulating professionals who are able to engage in inquiry into their own practice as well as collaborative practice with learners, colleagues, and parents, whānau and caregivers within schools and within the wider community.

Programme structure

The programme is structured to encompass both campus-based and school-based teaching and learning, with the majority of the time spent in schools.

This extensive time spent in schools aims to better enable you to make the links between theory and practice as you learn and practise concurrently in an authentic and supportive setting.

This is an intensive 180-point programme that runs from Semester Two of one year through to Semester One of the next year, with compulsory enrolment in Summer School between these two semesters. Students are able to choose 180 points from a range of Education Professional (EDPROF) courses.

Where could this programme take you?

This qualification will make you eligible for a higher starting salary as a teacher than graduates with a bachelors degree or graduate diploma. While many graduates go on to teach students Years 1-8 (typically age five to 13-year-olds) in New Zealand or overseas, the programme will also provide you with a range of transferable skills that can be applied to a range of careers.
