Summary
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the internationally recognised degree for those who wish to pursue a career as a research scientist or as an academic, and involves a major piece of specialised original research. Supervision for PhD research is available in almost all subjects’ areas offered by the Faculty.
Assessment
The thesis is assessed by three examiners - usually one from Victoria University, one from another New Zealand university and one from an overseas university. An oral examination is standard in the Faculty of Science.
Entry criteria
Applicants must have a first class or high Second Class Honours or Master's degree.
Other English Language requirements:
TOEFL score of 575 with (preferably) a TWE of 5; or 237 on the computer-based test; or a minimum of two ratings of 5 and two ratings of 4 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test or CAE grade B; Pearson Test of English a score of 65 (with a communicative score of not less than 58).
