Summary

The English Proficiency Programme (EPP) is aimed at developing your English skills for academic study. Successful students will be awarded a Certificate of Proficiency in English (CertEngProf). There are three 12-week courses in each academic year, each with different learning materials and covering different academic topics. Depending on your goals you can attend one, two or all three of the courses. You'll need to have an intermediate level of English or higher. On your first day you'll sit English language placement tests and your results will determine which class you will be placed in. This allows you the benefit of studying with other students with similar language needs, so that your language skills can be targeted and strengthened throughout the programme. You'll focus on the language within the context of academic reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks, and develop a wide range of critical and creative thinking skills and learning strategies that will prepare you for further study at university. You'll need to have a pre-intermediate level of English and above (equivalent to at least IELTS 4.0 or TOEFL 0-31). You do not need to sit an IELTS test. If you have a pre-intermediate level of English you will be placed into the Preparation for English Proficiency Programme (PREPP). This programme builds on your vocabulary and grammar knowledge through listening, reading, speaking and writing about academic topics. If you take the Intermediate or Upper Intermediate classes you'll be able to sit the English Proficiency Tests at the end of the course. These tests lead to entry into either Foundation Studies, undergraduate or postgraduate university courses.
