Industry-relevant learning

Build on your Bachelor's degree with this full-time one-year qualification in Early Childhood Education. Learn online and on your teaching experience placements.

Get the skills to work in early childhood services for young children in Aotearoa New Zealand and graduate eligible for provisional teacher registration with the Education Council.

You need an undergraduate degree or primary teaching qualification to study this Diploma.

After you graduate

This Graduate Diploma will allow you to apply for provisional teacher registration from the Education Council as well as apply for a teaching position in schools through New Zealand.

Qualification requirements

Complete at least 155 points

Include eight courses at 300 level:

• The Learner in Context (TCHG 301)
• The Teacher in Context (TCHG 302)
• Matauranga Maori in Education (TCHG 303)
• Early Development and Relationships (TCHG 305)
• Early Childhood Teaching and Pedagogy (TCHG 311)
• The Multi-literate Child (TCHG 312)
• Assessment for Learning in the ECE Context (TCHG 313)
• Science, Maths and Technology (TCHG 314)

Entry criteria

Bachelor's degree or equivalent, police check, references and selection meeting.

Other English Language requirements:

• IELTS overall band of 6.5, no sub-score below 6.0; or
• TOEFL 90 on the internet-based test with at least 20 in writing; or
• A minimum of two ratings of 5 and two ratings of 4 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test
• Pearson Test of English: A score of 65 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 58).
