Summary

This one-year professional taught master's degree is the only master's programme of its kind in New Zealand. The Master of Computer-Assisted Language Learning will produce skillful language educators who can use technology to enhance learning around the world. Graduates will be able to introduce technology-enhanced learning of languages in a variety of educational settings from early childhood to tertiary and adult learning.

Of particular interest to language educators and teachers of English and other languages, this programme prepares participants to make optimal use of technology in their classrooms, and paves the way for further development, based on the latest research.

Qualification structure and duration

The programme is offered online and students are not required to visit campus. The degree is made up of the following compulsory courses:

Candidates completing the Master of Computer-Assisted Language Learning can select a 30-point optional course as well.

Subjects and courses

Learn about the history and current state of technology-enhanced language learning and teaching and critically evaluate how the way we learn, teach and use languages has shifted in recent years. Participants will learn about how to design and implement materials and use tools in a variety of settings, including international languages, ESOL, heritage and first language maintenance and development, and indigenous language revitalisation.

Entry criteria

Normally the minimum requirement is a three-year bachelor's degree from a New Zealand university, or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent. If you gained your qualifications overseas, these will need to be assessed to make sure they are of an equivalent standard.

Other English language requirements: TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade; CAE or CPE score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58.
