Summary
Antarctic Studies is an internationally unique programme of study and inquiry that has been developed by staff at the University of Canterbury in partnership with Antarctica New Zealand, with significant contributions from the other New Zealand universities.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies attracts graduate students from a diverse range of disciplines and draws on the expertise of over thirty academic staff and guest speakers.
Students examine major scientific and environmental themes as well as contemporary issues facing Antarctica. Participants will consider the major social, political and legal issues facing the region. As part of the course students travel to Antarctica for a unique field trip to gather data for reports and projects.
The PGCertAntaStud may be awarded with Distinction.
Qualification structure
The PGCertAntaStud involves four compulsory courses, including one field trip course to Antarctica.

ANTA601 Antarctica: Contemporary Issues and Perspectives Part 1
ANTA602 Antarctica: Contemporary Issues and Perspectives Part 2
ANTA603 Antarctica Field Work
ANTA604 Supervised Project in Antarctic Studies
Further study
UC also offers a Master of Antarctic Studies and a Doctor of Philosophy in the discipline.

Entry criteria
Postgraduate certificate require a relevant bachelor's degree. If you gained your qualifications overseas, these will need to be assessed to ensure they are of an equivalent standard.
Other English language requirements: TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade; CAE or CPE score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58.
