Summary

This qualification is intended for learners of English as an additional language, attending NZQA approved programmes delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand or off-shore. Graduates will have the language skills required to understand and use basic language in familiar situations to engage in simple and routine tasks, social encounters and exchanges of information with emerging fluency and accuracy

What will I learn?

Graduates will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:

• Simple face to face interpersonal communication
• Understanding of simple spoken and written instructions and descriptions
• Completion of simple forms relevant to workplace contexts

Career opportunities and pathways

These skills will provide a basis for progression onto the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 3) qualification.

Entry criteria

Applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

• Be 16 years of age or older on the 1st of January in the year that the student enrols, unless approved otherwise by the Programme Leader.
• The student can reasonably expect to achieve the standards required for successful completion of the programme or course.

Students require a minimum IELTS score of 3 with no band lower than 2.5, or must gain Elementary or Pre-Intermediate level in a test administered by an approved third party provider (such as Vital English) to gain entry into this programme.
